It
has come to our attention that dental offices may need assistance
in complying with the EPA requirements.
In
the past, the disposal of spent photochemical in the dentists office
has been to routinely pour the chemicals down the drain. This practice
is now illegal, because the silver in the fixer chemistry has been
identified as a hazardous waste and therefore controlled by the
Federal EPA (CFR 40) maximum allowable discharge of silver as a
hazardous waste is five ( 5 ) PPM (parts per million in any amount
of solution), and many local water districts impose even lower limits.
The
dental offices must comply with these State and Local ordinances.
Random inspections are being performed by Enviromental officials!
